Morning Alsace VillagesExperience Alsace's utter charm with a guided tour of some of the region's storybook villages
Experience the authentic charm of three remarkable Alsatian villages, each preserving centuries of history amid the rolling vineyards of the wine route.
Departure and Kaysersberg
Your discovery begins in Colmar, where your English-speaking guide welcomes you. The journey leads first to Kaysersberg, voted "Preferred Village of the French" in 2017. This medieval gem reveals layers of history through its architecture and urban planning.
Kaysersberg's name, meaning "Emperor's Mountain," reflects its strategic importance since the 13th century. The village grew around its imperial castle, whose ruins still watch over the town. The remarkable fortified bridge, dating from 1514, stands as a testament to the village's historical significance along medieval trade routes.
The guided walk reveals the town's architectural treasures, including the striking Church of the Holy Cross, built in 1230. Notable features include perfectly preserved half-timbered houses adorned with oriel windows and Renaissance-style courtyards, reflecting the prosperity brought by the wine trade.
Riquewihr's Medieval Splendor
The route continues to Riquewihr, an exceptional example of a 16th-century Alsatian wine town. Protected by medieval walls, Riquewihr appears frozen in time. The Dolder Gate Tower, built in 1291, stands guard over narrow streets lined with winegrowers' houses, their colorful facades reflecting centuries of viticultural tradition. Its architecture reveals a unique blend of French elegance and German solidity, characteristic of Alsace's rich cultural heritage.
Hunawihr's Quiet Beauty
The final destination is Hunawihr, distinguished as one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France." This small village presents an exceptional harmony of medieval architecture and natural beauty. At its heart stands a remarkable fortified church, dating from the 14th century, surrounded by ancient ramparts and a historic cemetery.
The village takes pride in its unique architectural ensemble, including the Renaissance Town Hall and the 16th-century Maison des Vignerons. The surrounding vineyards, cultivated since Roman times, produce some of Alsace's finest wines, particularly renowned Rieslings.
Throughout the journey, the route winds along the famous Alsace Wine Route, offering views of castles, Renaissance buildings, and meticulously tended vineyards that have shaped this landscape for over a millennium.
After your tour, you will return to Colmar.
