Morning Alsace Wine Tour

This half-day tour introduces visitors to the celebrated Alsace Wine Route, offering an intimate exploration of France's distinguished white wine region.

Journey Along the Wine Route

Your discovery begins at the designated meeting point near the pharmacy in central Strasbourg. Here, you will meet your English-speaking driver-guide who will introduce the day's activities before beginning the journey in a comfortable vehicle.

The Alsace Wine Route, established in 1953, winds through picturesque landscapes for 170 kilometers. This region holds a unique position in French viticulture, distinguished by its exceptional white wines. The area benefits from a distinctive microclimate created by the Vosges Mountains, which shield the vineyards from excessive rainfall, creating ideal conditions for grape cultivation.

First Stop: Obernai and Initial Wine Tasting

Your first destination is Obernai, a remarkable town established in 1240. This historical center of wine production offers insight into medieval Alsatian architecture and viticulture. The town's rich heritage includes the Saints Pierre and Paul Church, the historic Belfry, the Six Bucket Well, and the Sainte-Odile Fountain.

At the first selected winery, you will discover the nuances of Alsatian wines. The region's unique geology and climate create perfect conditions for aromatic white varieties. Your host will explain how the diverse soils - granite, limestone, schist, and volcanic - contribute to the wines' distinctive characteristics.

Second Winery Visit

The journey continues to another distinguished family-owned winery. Here, you will learn about the seven main grape varieties of Alsace: Riesling, known for its elegance and mineral qualities; Gewurztraminer, celebrated for its intense aromatic profile; Pinot Gris, appreciated for its full body; Muscat, prized for its grape-like flavors; Pinot Blanc, valued for its subtlety; Sylvaner, recognized for its freshness; and Pinot Noir, the region's primary red grape.

Your host will demonstrate traditional wine-making techniques passed down through generations. The tasting session includes several wines that exemplify the region's excellence, accompanied by expert commentary on their characteristics and food-pairing possibilities.

The Unique Character of Alsatian Wines

Alsace stands apart in French wine production for several reasons. It is one of few regions to label wines by grape variety rather than appellation. The area's protected geographical status ensures strict quality controls, while its history of alternating French and German rule has created a fascinating blend of cultural influences in both wine-making and architecture.

The region's dedication to traditional methods, combined with modern expertise, produces wines of remarkable clarity and precision. Many vineyards still practice hand-harvesting, particularly for the prestigious Grand Cru sites, ensuring optimal grape quality.

The tour concludes with a return journey to Strasbourg, offering final views of the vine-covered hillsides that have produced exceptional wines for centuries.
