Baden-Baden & The Black Forest In GermanyTake a trip across the border and see some of Southern Germany's best sights
Join an intimate group for a day of discovery through Germany's legendary Black Forest, where ancient traditions blend with natural wonders.
Morning: Baden-Baden and The Black Forest High Road
Your exploration begins in Strasbourg, where your English-speaking guide welcomes you. Crossing the Rhine into Baden-Württemberg, the landscape transforms as you approach the Black Forest, known to Germans as Schwarzwald. This mountain range, crowned by the 1,493-meter Feldberg peak, earned its name from the dense canopy of evergreens that filter the sunlight, creating mysterious shadows below.
The first destination is Baden-Baden, the elegant spa town that rose to prominence during the Belle Époque. This sophisticated resort has welcomed European nobility and artists since Roman times, when its thermal waters first attracted wealthy patrons. During your guided walk along the Lichtentaler Allee, you will discover the town's grand architectural heritage, from the neo-classical Kurhaus to the ornate Trinkhalle pump room, adorned with frescoes depicting local legends.
The journey continues along the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (Black Forest High Road), an engineering marvel completed in 1930. This scenic route winds through the northern Black Forest, offering spectacular panoramas of the Upper Rhine Valley and the distant Vosges Mountains. The road rises through dense forest to several viewpoints where the vastness of the Rhine plain unfolds below.
Midday: Mummelsee Lake
At an elevation of 1,036 meters lies Mummelsee, a pristine cirque lake formed by ancient glaciers. The lake, measuring 800 meters in circumference and 17 meters in depth, takes its name from the 'Mummeln' - water spirits that, according to centuries-old Black Forest folklore, are said to inhabit its waters. Here, you will have time to explore and enjoy lunch, perhaps sampling traditional Black Forest specialties such as Schwarzwälder Schinken (smoked ham) or the celebrated Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest cake).
Afternoon: Sasbachwalden Village
The tour continues to Sasbachwalden, a village that exemplifies the region's traditional architecture and horticultural excellence. This community, nestled among terraced vineyards, has earned national recognition for its stunning floral displays. The half-timbered houses, some dating to the 16th century, showcase intricate wooden frameworks filled with flowers, creating a scene that captures the essence of Black Forest culture.
Late Afternoon: The Baden Wine Route
The final leg of the journey follows the Badische Weinstrasse, Germany's longest wine route stretching over 500 kilometers. This historic path weaves through a landscape dotted with medieval castles and ancient vineyards. The region's unique soil composition and favorable climate create ideal conditions for producing distinctive wines, particularly Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris).
You will return to Strasbourg, concluding your journey through the Black Forest region.
