Christmas Market Experience In AlsaceGet into the festive spirit in Colmar and other pretty Alsatian villages
Experience the enchantment of Alsace's centuries-old Christmas markets, where ancient traditions blend with festive celebrations in historic settings.
Morning: Colmar's Christmas Magic
Your winter adventure begins in Strasbourg, where you will meet your English-speaking guide. The journey takes you to Colmar, where the tradition of Christmas markets dates back to 1570. The city transforms during the festive season, as wooden chalets fill the medieval squares. The historic center becomes an enchanting display of lights and decorations, carefully designed to complement the town's architectural heritage spanning eight centuries.
Colmar hosts five distinct Christmas markets, each with its own character. The Place des Dominicains market stands in the shadow of a 14th-century church, while the Place de l'Ancienne Douane market occupies the square of the historic customs house. The indoor craft market in the Koïfhus, Colmar's 15th-century customs house, showcases local artisans continuing centuries-old traditions.
Lunch: Traditional Alsatian Holiday Treats
During your free time in Colmar, sample regional specialties such as bredele (traditional Christmas cookies), pain d'épices (spiced bread), and mannala (brioche shaped like St. Nicholas). These treats, paired with warm vin chaud (mulled wine), represent centuries of Alsatian culinary heritage.
Afternoon: Village Christmas Markets
The tour continues along the Alsace Wine Route to visit additional markets in picturesque medieval villages. Depending on the date, you might visit Obernai, where the market tradition began in the Middle Ages, or Bergheim, known for its intact 14th-century ramparts decorated with seasonal lights.
On select dates, the itinerary includes Riquewihr or Ribeauvillé, where markets recreate medieval atmosphere. These villages, preserved since the 16th century, provide an authentic backdrop for Christmas celebrations. In Riquewihr, half-timbered houses dressed in holiday decorations create a scene reminiscent of an illustrated storybook.
Each market celebrates local craftsmanship, featuring artisans who maintain traditional skills passed through generations. Observe woodcarvers, glass blowers, and potters demonstrating their craft, creating authentic Alsatian decorations and gifts.
The day concludes with a return journey to Strasbourg, passing through the winter landscape of the Alsatian countryside.
