Morning Alsace Villages
Experience Alsace's utter charm with a guided tour of some of the region's storybook villages

Morning Alsace Villages

Experience the cultural wealth and architectural beauty of Alsace's most remarkable villages, where centuries of wine-making tradition blend with medieval history.

The Historic Town of Barr

Your exploration begins next to the pharmacy in central Strasbourg, where you will meet your English-speaking guide.

The scenic drive brings you to Barr, where vineyards cascade down gentle slopes near Obernai. This remarkable town unfolds as a living museum of Alsatian wine culture, its narrow streets telling stories of centuries past. In the surrounding vineyards, pristine rows of vines produce the region's most celebrated varieties: the crisp Sylvaner, the noble Riesling, and the aromatic Gewurztraminer. The town's architectural splendor reveals itself in the impressive town hall and the historic 'Marco Folie' house, its transformation into a museum preserving centuries of architectural and viticultural excellence.

Mittelbergheim's Wine Legacy

From Barr, the road winds through rolling hills to Mittelbergheim, an authentic wine village resting at the foot of Mont Saint-Odile. Here, tradition runs deep in the soil itself, most notably in the prestigious Zotzenberg Grand Cru vineyards. The village's Renaissance town hall proudly houses the "Weinschlag" collection, a treasure trove of viticultural history dating to 1510. As you stroll past traditional wine growers' homes, their grand courtyards speak of the prosperity that centuries of masterful wine production have brought to this region. Each stone facade and ancient cellar holds memories of countless harvests and celebrations.

Andlau's Spiritual Heritage

The tour's culmination arrives in Andlau, where history manifests in every corner. The Saint Peter—Saint Paul Abbatial Church, founded in the 9th century, stands as the crown jewel of this medieval town. Despite suffering damage from fires throughout history, the church preserves exceptional Romanesque sculptures and a remarkable historiated frieze.

The importance of Andlau extends beyond its religious heritage: the town played a crucial role in the development of Alsatian viticulture, with its abbey being one of the earliest centers of organized wine production in the region. The surrounding vineyards, still productive today, continue a tradition that spans more than a millennium.

Scenic Wine Route

The return to Strasbourg offers opportunities to capture photographs of the stunning Alsatian landscape. The Wine Route, stretching over 170 kilometers, connects more than 1,000 wine producers. This historic path weaves through landscapes dotted with medieval castles and Renaissance buildings, each telling part of Alsace's rich historical narrative.
