Montepulciano WalksLand of excellent wine and ancient traditions
Montepulciano is located in a strategic position between the Orcia Valley and the Valdichiana. Thanks to its economic prosperity, this town became the headquarter of rich noble families who competed one another building splendid Renaissance residences and beautifying the city with elegant churches and monuments.
It’s still visible a dense line of underground tunnels that families have used since the Middle Ages as cellars to age the famous local wine.
We will start the visit of this classic Tuscan hilltop town from the City Hall square where one can admire a perfect example of a Renaissance style Piazza; if you’ve seen the Movie series “The Medici “ or the Twilight Saga “New Moon”, you’ll easily recognize this place!
The main Church is the Cathedral of Saint Mary and a short visit inside is highly recommended: medieval paintings, Renaissance statues and much more.. Definetely the main product of the area around this town is one the top red tuscan wines: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Strolling around the cobbled streets of the historic centre, one can see dozens and dozens of wine shops, artisan workshops and other activities. At this point from a nearby square, nobody can miss the unforgettable view that from one side overlooks the Orcia valley and from another point extends up to the Trasimeno Lake, the largest one in central Italy.
