Volterra Walks
Volterra is a classic tuscan hilltown with an incredible history: its foundation dates back to the Etruscan period and later became Roman city.
The City tour starts from the political centre Piazza dei Priori which is surrounded by many spectacular medieval buildings. The main one is the City hall with its perfectly preserved glazed terracotta crests on the facade. Behind the square is the Romanesque Cathedral with its elegant bell tower and the Baptistery of San Giovanni with its octagonal structure. The visit continues in the maze of medieval streets where you can admire the Church of San Michele, Palazzo Viti and the nearby Porta Fiorentina. Not far from here you will be struck by the view of the Roman theatre and by the Etruscan urns incorporated in the medieval city walls. You can also see the massive Cyclopean Etruscan walls and the famous Porta all’Arco, the Etruscan gate from the fourth century b.C.
On top of the hill, Volterra is still dominated by the Medici Fortress. From this panoramic point the view sweeps over the typical landscape of the Balze (clay cliffs) in the surrounding valley .
It is highly recommended the visit of one the many alabaster workshops. Alabaster is the fascinating stone mined and crafted in Volterra since the Etruscan period.
